THE ARCHITECTURE OF UMMAYYAD MOSQUE   After the Muslim conquest of Damascus in 634, the mosque was built on the site of a Christian basilica dedicated to John the Baptist Yahya , honored as a prophet by Christians and Muslims. built by the Umayyad caliph , al-Walid II between 708 and 715 C.E. When Damascus became the capital of the Umayyad dynasty, the early 8th century caliph al-Walid envisioned a beautiful mosque at the heart of his new capital city, one that would rival any of the great religious buildings of the Christian world. Damascus is the oldest inhabitant capital in the world. Today it's the capitale of the Syrian Arab Republic With a poupulation of 2,392,000. Damas-دمشق The city is filled with islamic architecture as it was the capital of the ummayyad empire and due to its important location.   The modern city is a complete contrast as well. It is one of the most modern and advanced cities in the Middle East. The streets utilize a standard western grid and the buildings are mostly modern, but plain and simple when compared to other contemporary cities. As we can see the city combine both old lagre  buildings that symbolize it and modern blocks and desgins that makes it One Of the most beautiful cities in the Middle East.
